“I love Mickey Mouse more than any woman I’ve ever known” by Walt Disney Mickey Mouse invented by Walt Disney is a popular icon undisputed. Everyone knows him and there are many great artists who have taken inspiration from Mickey Mouse. Just think, for example, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Claes Oldenburg. Today we add to this list a new name, Damien Hirst, who gave birth to a cute and original reinterpretation of the most famous mouse in the world. The well-known artist was in fact contacted by Walt Disney to create unique work of art, a paint on canvas entitled “Mickey.” The painting will be auctioned in aid of Kids Company as part of Christie’s Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening Auction on Thursday 13 February. “Damien Hirst’s “Mickey” painting is a great example of a modern, innovative and creative interpretation of the world’s most famous mouse whose never-ending appeal spans across generations of audiences. We’re also thrilled that this collaboration will benefit vulnerable children and young people.” describes the work Carlotta Saltini, VP and Managing Director for The Walt Disney Company Europe. He comments, “Mickey Mouse represents happiness and the joy of being a kid and I have reduced his shape down to the basic elements of a few simple spots. I hope people love it, because it is still instantly recognisable – Mickey is such a universal and powerful icon.“ And we can say that the artist’s style is instantly recognizable. Combining with playful balance of the colored circles – according to the technique of Spot Paintings – Hirst has given new life to an always fantastic Mickey Mouse.
